I'd like to second (or third) Beckett. Not unknown in any sense, but definitely weird and challenging. Among the ones I have read, "Krapp's Last Tape" is my favourite. Other than Beckett, the only 20th century plays I've read are "The Crucible" and "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller (ca.1950), and "Pygmalion" by Bernard Shaw (1912).
